Lab Values
Diversity of representation leads to diversity of perspectives:
The “diverse predictive theorem” (Page, 2007) asserts that the determinant of a group or team’s success is the accuracy of judgements of its individuals and the diversity of their opinions. We believe the success and growth of psychology as a science needs to leverage the diverse knowledge bases and backgrounds of its members.
Personal wellbeing comes first:
The work we do in the lab does not define our self worth. Science is a human endeavor that is only as healthy as those doing the work. Therefore we commit to prioritizing the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the individual.
Broader Impact is more than a grant section:
Science (even basic science) should strive to improve society. Having the opportunity to conduct scientific research is a privilege. We commit to applying our work in ways that foster positive social change.
Service
Roberto has served on the CMU Psychology Diversity and Inclusion board and has co-founded the Diverse Recruitment committee with Dr. Cassie Eng to spearhead college-wide graduate recruitment efforts from underrepresented groups including CMU’s presence at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), the largest conference for recruiting underrepresented students.
In Summer 2021 Roberto became a Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) leadership coordinator. The SPUR program is designed to give students from diverse and under-resourced backgrounds the opportunity to conduct supervised research at CMU. As a leadership coordinator, they participated in student mentorship and coordinated professional development seminars for students, earning them two Dick Hayes Service Awards. Starting in 2022, Roberto joined the SPUR co-organization team and continued to serve as a research mentor for the 2023 and 2024 cohorts.
As of Fall 2024, Roberto has been invited to join CMU Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ DEIB Strategic Plan Action Committee.
